Budapest is having a moment as a destination-wedding city. Here are the venues I'd actually recommend, and why the most-Instagrammed one isn't on the list.
Budapest has quietly become one of Europe's best destination-wedding cities. It's a flight hub, the architecture is unmatched in Central Europe, the food is excellent, and costs are roughly 40% lower than Italy or France for an equivalent venue. Here are five places I'd send a friend.
Hotel Gellért: the upper salon for getting-ready, the thermal bath area for editorial portraits if your hotel grants access. Light is famously good — ornate ceilings, tall windows. Beware: the lobby is busy mid-day.
Várkert Bazár: restored neo-Renaissance complex by the Danube. Best for ceremonies in the inner courtyard or the riverside terrace. The promenade at sunset is unreal.
Bock Bisztró tasting room: small and intimate, perfect for dinners of 20–40. Warm light from sconces, no flash needed.
Buda Castle area: not a venue per se but the area around it provides incredible portrait locations — cobbled lanes, bastion views, the funicular.
Margaret Island: for outdoor ceremonies in the warmer months, with the Danube and the city skyline as backdrop.
The one I'd avoid: the Parliament's interior. Yes, it's famous. No, it's not flexible. Restrictions on flash, on movement, on guest count. You'll spend half the day fighting the venue. Photograph it from outside instead.
