October 2026

A template Italian wedding day timeline built on real sunset times for Lake Como and Florence, with buffers for boats, speeches and the music curfew.

Every Italian wedding day timeline I draft starts at the end of the day. First I look up the minute the sun sets at your venue on your date, block out the light around it for portraits, then work backwards to the ceremony and the morning. The aperitivo, dinner, speeches and the party all fit around that one point because, unless a town-hall slot or a religious rule fixes the clock, it is the one thing on the day nobody can move.

Below are real sunset times for Lake Como and Florence by month, a June template you can shift to your own date, and the buffers most timelines forget.

Why sunset is the fixed point

Golden hour has no official definition. timeanddate.com describes it as the time when the sun is between 6 degrees above and 6 degrees below the horizon. In practice, that is the last stretch of direct light before sunset and the glow just after it.

Mid-afternoon summer light is the opposite: high, hard and unkind to faces in the open. So hold the ceremony while the sun is high, in shade, and take the portraits when it is low.

Two details catch people out:

  • Mountains and hills. The sunset times below come from timeanddate.com, whose calculations assume a flat horizon at the observer's altitude, so the sun disappears earlier behind a ridge. On a lake framed by mountains, or a terrace with a hill to the west, the direct light can leave well before the official minute.
  • The clock change. In 2027, Italian summer time runs from 28 March to 31 October. On 31 October the sun sets about an hour earlier by the clock than the day before: 17:07 in Florence.

Sunset times at Lake Como and in Florence

These are timeanddate.com's figures for the 15th of each month in 2027, in local summer time. The second time is civil dusk, when the centre of the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon.

Lake Como (figures for Bellagio):

  • April: sunset 20:09, civil dusk 20:40
  • May: sunset 20:48, civil dusk 21:23
  • June: sunset 21:15, civil dusk 21:53
  • July: sunset 21:10, civil dusk 21:47
  • August: sunset 20:32, civil dusk 21:04
  • September: sunset 19:35, civil dusk 20:05
  • October: sunset 18:37, civil dusk 19:07

Florence (figures for Firenze):

  • April: sunset 19:58, civil dusk 20:28
  • May: sunset 20:33, civil dusk 21:06
  • June: sunset 20:58, civil dusk 21:34
  • July: sunset 20:54, civil dusk 21:29
  • August: sunset 20:19, civil dusk 20:50
  • September: sunset 19:25, civil dusk 19:54
  • October: sunset 18:32, civil dusk 19:01

The latest sunsets fall at the end of June: 21:17 at Bellagio and 21:01 in Florence. On paper, Lake Como's sunsets run about 15 to 17 minutes later than Florence's in early summer, though the mountains can take that back. And autumn moves fast. In Florence, sunset goes from 19:51 on 1 September to 18:58 on 30 September, almost an hour in one month, so plan from your exact date, not the month.

The direction changes too. In mid-June the sun sets in the north-west, at about 304 degrees in Florence. By mid-October it sets just south of due west, at about 259 degrees. A terrace that catches the sunset in June can miss it entirely in October. For heat, rain and crowds month by month, see when to get married in Tuscany.

A template Italian wedding day timeline for June

This one is for mid-June at Lake Como, with sunset at 21:15 and a symbolic ceremony at the venue. Read it as a shape, not a script.

  1. 14:00: photography starts with details, stationery and the dress, then the last hour of hair and makeup.
  2. 15:45: getting dressed, near a window, with only the people you want in the frame.
  3. 16:30: ready, with half an hour in hand. A first look, if you want one, happens here, in shade.
  4. 17:15: guests leave the hotel by boat or shuttle.
  5. 18:00: the ceremony. Allow 45 minutes, including the walk in and the walk out.
  6. 18:45: congratulations, then family photos while everyone is still together.
  7. 19:15: aperitivo with your guests, then 15 minutes of portraits in open shade.
  8. 20:15: guests are seated, with a welcome and the first course.
  9. 20:45: golden-hour portraits, about 20 minutes between courses.
  10. 21:15: sunset, and five more minutes outside in the afterglow if the sky is doing something.
  11. 22:30: speeches, grouped together, before dessert.
  12. 23:00: cake, first dance and the party.

If you would rather not leave the table, run the aperitivo through golden hour and seat dinner at about 21:30 instead.

For any other date, shift every line by the difference in sunset. September at Lake Como (sunset 19:35) moves the whole day 1 hour 40 minutes earlier, so the ceremony lands at about 16:20. Mid-October in Florence (sunset 18:32) puts it at about 15:15 and seats dinner at about 17:30, before sunset, so the speeches, cake and party all fall after dark.

Getting ready

Getting ready is the part most likely to run late, and it pushes everything after it. Keep the half-hour of slack in the template and protect it.

Choose the room for its window, not its size: soft daylight from one side does more for these frames than any furniture. Clear the surfaces before photography starts.

The ceremony: shade first

At 18:00 in June the sun is still well above the horizon. Seat guests in shade, and face the ceremony so nobody squints into the light, the two of you included.

If your legal ceremony is at a town hall, its time slot is the fixed point. Confirm it with the Comune before building anything around it.

For a Jewish ceremony on a Saturday evening, the clock is set by the end of Shabbat. Chabad's guide to wedding dates explains that a Saturday-night wedding begins only after Shabbat ends at nightfall, with no preparations before then. It calls summer Saturday nights "virtually impossible". Hebcal puts havdalah on 19 June 2027 at 22:15 in Como and 21:55 in Florence. The officiating rabbi sets the rules for the ceremony. For the tisch, bedeken and chuppah in the timeline, see photographing a Jewish wedding.

Aperitivo and family photos

Do the family photos straight after the ceremony, while everyone is in one place. A written list and one person who knows both families make this quick.

Then enjoy the aperitivo. It is where your guests finally get to talk to you, with room for a short portrait break in open shade before the real light arrives.

Golden-hour portraits

Twenty minutes is enough. Slip out while the first course is cleared and come back before the sun has gone. Tell the venue coordinator in advance, so the kitchen holds the next course rather than serving two empty chairs.

After sunset, the light does not switch off. Until civil dusk, the sky still lights faces softly. It suits a few frames with the lit table behind you.

Boats, shuttles and buffers

Every move takes longer than the map suggests: guests gather slowly, and a large group boards in waves.

  • Lake Como. If guests use the public ferries, Navigazione Laghi publishes seasonal timetables. In 2026, the autumn timetable started on 5 October. They advise reaching the ticket office about 20 minutes before departure.
  • Florence. The city's ZTL Bus covers the whole built-up area, is active every day around the clock, and lets tourist coaches in only with a permit bought online. Check that your transport company has one for your date.
  • Country venues. Ask whether a full-size coach can reach the door, or whether guests change to minibuses partway.

I would put 15 minutes of slack around every transfer, private boats included, and 30 minutes before the ceremony.

Dinner and speeches

A served dinner of several courses takes time, and that is part of its pleasure. After dark, the table lighting carries the photographs: candles, lanterns, anything hung in the trees.

Speeches are what make dinner run late. Group them into one block, before the first course or before dessert, not scattered across the evening. Give the photographer the order of speakers, and make sure whoever is speaking after dark has a candle or soft light nearby.

The party and the music curfew

There is no single answer to "when does the music stop?" Italy's framework noise law, Law 447 of 1995, article 6, gives each Comune the job of zoning its territory for noise. It also lets the Comune authorise temporary activities, and events in public places or places open to the public, beyond the normal limits, on conditions it sets itself. Your venue's contract may add its own end time.

Ask the venue, in writing:

  • what time amplified music must stop outdoors
  • whether an indoor room can carry the party on after that
  • whether a permit or exception is needed, and who applies for it

Then schedule the first dance and the busiest part of the dance floor well before the cut-off, not in its last half-hour.

A checklist for your own timeline

  • Exact sunset and civil dusk for your date and venue
  • Where the sun is at ceremony time, and when it leaves your portrait spots
  • Ferry timetables, boat bookings and any coach permits for your date
  • The music curfew and the indoor option, confirmed in writing
  • For a Saturday-evening Jewish wedding, the havdalah time for that date
  • A written family photo list and the person who will run it

The same logic works for an elopement, with fewer moving parts. See these hours across full days in the portfolio, and what wedding coverage includes.

If you already have a date and a venue, send them to me. I'll look up the sunset for that exact day and place, check where the light falls, and reply with my availability and a first plan for your timeline.

Sunset times are timeanddate.com figures for 2027. Timetables, permits and noise rules change: this guide was checked in October 2026, so confirm the details for your date with your venue and the Comune before you book.
