A practical guide to one of the most photographed venues in the world — what light to chase, what hours to book, and which boat company to hire for the transit.
Villa del Balbianello is to wedding photography what Tom Ford is to menswear: instantly recognisable, deceptively complex, and only as good as the planning behind it. After three weddings shot at this villa I've learned the small things matter — the angle of the sun on the cypress avenue at 5:42 p.m., which boat captain knows how to slow the Riva for portraits, the fact that the lower terrace has the best light at sunset but the upper one has the silhouette of the mountains.
If you're considering this venue, book at least 12 months out — Villa del Balbianello accepts a limited number of weddings per season. Bring a planner who has worked there before, because the accreditation process for vendors is real and slow. And budget for the boat transit between the villa and your dinner location: it's the most cinematic 12 minutes of the day.
On the photography side: I recommend a first-look in the morning if you can — the villa's eastern light is soft, the gardeners aren't there yet, and you'll be able to use the cypress avenue without other couples. Ceremony portraits work best in the courtyard. Boat portraits work best with a long lens from the back seat. Save the silhouette for the very end, against the sunset over the lake.
